Hill Starts

Starting Up Hill.

The weight of the car will tend to hold

it back, so the engine has more work to do!

1) Clutch pedal down.

2) Select first gear.

3) ‘Set the gas’ (more than you would for a level road). Hold the pedal still.

4) Find the ‘Biting Point’. Hold the clutch pedal still.

5) Check mirrors and right shoulder blind spot.

6) Give signal if necessary.

7) Prepare to release the handbrake.

8) Final safety check -  Look round again.

9) If safe, add a little more ‘gas’ as you lift the handbrake lever and at the same time let the clutch up slightly until you hear and feel the engine trying to pull the car.

10) Smoothly release the handbrake - put your hand back to the steering wheel.

11) Add more ‘gas’ and bring the clutch up smoothly as the car moves off.

Moving Off - Downhill

The engine has less work to do because the weight of the car will help you to move off!

1) Clutch pedal down.

2) Select the correct gear. You can usually move off downhill in 2nd gear!

3) Apply the footbrake! Keep the pedal pressed down.

4) Release the handbrake.

5) Check mirrors and right shoulder blind spot

6) Give a signal if necessary.

7) Final safety check -  Look round again.

8) If safe, release the footbrake and at the same time let the clutch up smoothly as the car starts to move.

Parking facing Uphill

Stop as close to the side of the road as you can!

Where there is a curb -

Leave your steering wheel turned AWAY from the curb.

- The Curb will then stop the front wheels moving if the car roll back.

Where there is no curb -

Leave the steering wheel turned TOWARDS the side of the road.

 - The car will not roll across the road if it moves.

- IN BOTH CASES -

LEAVE THE CAR IN FIRST GEAR WITH

THE HANDBRAKE FIRMLY APPLIED
